Fira, is the capital of Santorini. Built on the cliffs, offers amazing views to the volcanic islands, the caldera and sunset. If you prefer walking rather than using the cable car, from the center you can walk down the famous 586 steps to the old port. If you are not scared of hights you might even want to try a donkey ride! in the capital of Santorini you will have a great time, that is why many choose to book their hotel here, especially for short stays . Every visitor of the island will spend at least one evening in Fira, which makes the area really busy from 17:00 till late at night. People that stay in the center, will most probably explore the island during the day, and return in the evening. There are so many unique sights that are waiting to be discovered! The excavations site and the red beach in Akrotiri, the black sand volcanic beaches, the famous villages of the north, Imerovigli and Oia,famous for their sunset views, the medieval village of Pyrgos, and the old wineries are just a few of them.

To get to all these locations there are 3 options.

• the public buses: The central station is right in the center of the town. From there there are routes to Imerovigli, Oia, Kamari, Perissa and Akrotiri. There are also a few departures daily to the port and airport. Buses can get really crowded in the summer.
• the local taxis: The main taxi station is just next to the bus terminal. There are usually taxis waiting for clients, but during the high season, or when big cruise ships arrive it can really get hard to find one available.

Useful information if you rent a car in Fira Santorini

In Fira many hotels are built on the cliffs. That means that you can only get to them on foot, and not by any type of vehicle (motorbikes and atvs included). If you stay in a place like this, parking facilities are unavailable in the hotel area. Fortunately there are a lot of big FREE parking facilities provided by the islands municipality for your rental car. These parking areas can be easily located if you use Google maps and are named as Parking 1, 2, 3, 4 ,5 . While the booking proccess our team will inform you if the car can be delivered at your location, and if not a meeting point, nearby is suggested. In order to provide a better service in that case it would be great if the reservations department had a phone number of the client. Having a sim card working in Greece is strongly advised anyway.
Gas stations, are easy to find in the area. There are 3 of them within 5 minute drive from the center. Clients do not fill up the cars themselves. There are employees to help you in every station.
Pedestrian zones are common in the center. For example vehicles are not allowed in the main square, and in all the little streets near the cliffside. There are of course signs to indicate vehicle free zones. Parking on the sides of the main road is not allowed anywhere in Fira, and the local authorities will most likely issue a parking ticket to vehicles parked in a way that traffic is jammed.
