Kamari beach is one of the most popular black sand beaches of Santorini. Τhe area was not developed at all before 1956 when the big earthquake took place in Santorini. The result of the earthquake was the total destruction of the village of Mesa Gonia. The people of the village were then relocated to the area of what today is Kamari beach. The first foreign visitors started to arrive in 1970. Kamari beach was the first area to develop in a way that could host groups of tourists, and was the first area to welcome the first charter flights passengers. The area started to be a quite popular destination, and soon a lot of big hotels started to appear. Even today, some of the islands biggest resorts are found here. Kamari nowdays is a well organized seaside tourist destination. Every part of the very long black sand beach offers sunbeds and umbrellas and as a location is very good for families.
Along the beach there is long pedestrian road, perfect for relaxing long walks, and very safe for children. There are numerous restaurants and cafe’s for every taste. From traditional fish taverns, to modern bistro’s, where you can enjoy lunch, dinner, breakfast, or drinks . Lot’s of shops offering souvenirs, clothing, and local products are open all day till late at night. Like in every organized beach, diving centers and water sports activities are also available all day.
When the sun sets, along the beach walking road, a whole new street market appears, consisting of street artists and people selling hand made items. A very good location for relaxing, and swimming. If you are into archeological sites, the Ancient Thira, an antique Santorini city is within walking distance, on the top of the mountain near the beach, or you could drive all the way up if you have your own rental car.
