Santorini Akrotiri Excavations
Akrotiri is an ancient city of the Bronze age, founded by the Minoans on the island of Santorini. The city was destroyed by the catastrophic volcano eruption of Santorini about 1.640 B.C. The eruption covered the city with volcanic ash, which preserved the buildings, frescoes and artifacts in surprisingly good condition. The ancient city of Akrotiri most likely inspired Plato for the Atlantis story. The excavation started in 1967 by professor Marinatos Spiros.
